If you have difficulty breathing through your nose or notice a change in its shape after an injury, start with a medical examination. Some nasal septum problems may need surgical correction, but the septum is not the cause of every nasal blockage.

• The aim of surgery: The underlying problem, alternatives and possible improvements in breathing or appearance.
• Recovery: Potential risks, follow-up care and when to return to your usual activities.
